Zutz Finds Net Late For 1-0 Cardinal Victory

STANFORD, Calif.- Senior Jess Zutz (Wilmington, Del.) snapped a scoreless tie with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, propelling unbeaten Stanford to a 1-0 victory over Longwood in Farmville, Va., on Wednesday evening.

Zutz scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year at the 61:34 mark of the second half to ice the win for Stanford, which is undefeated in its first four games to open the year. Wednesday's victory also improves the Cardinal's NorPac conference record to 2-0.

For a third straight game, Stanford relied on a dominant offensive attack. The Cardinal only managed one goal against Longwood (0-5, 0-1 NorPac), but held convincing advantages in shot attempts at 25-4 and penalty corners at 15-1.

Freshman Xanthe Travlos (Staffordshire, England) registered a game-high seven shots while fellow rookie Camille Gandhi (London, England) chipped in with five. Junior Bailey Richardson (Los Gatos, Calif.) added four.

Senior Madison Bell (Worthington, Ohio) made two saves in goal, notching her first shutout of the year.

Longwood was pinned in its end for most of the first half, as Stanford held a 9-1 edge in shots. The Cardinal was able to collect eight penalty corners in the opening 35:00, but could not convert the opportunities into goals and the score was tied 0-0 at intermission.

Stanford and Longwood came out of the break energized as each squad was looking for the go-ahead goal. The Cardinal continued to press from the outset and was awarded five consecutive penalty corners.

With a scrum in front of the Lancer net with 8:30 to go in the game, Zutz picked up the loose ball and fired a shot through traffic in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Longwood continued to battle and had a chance late in the with a reverse shot off the stick of Strickland that went just wide. Stanford regained possession and kept the ball to run out the final seconds to preserve the 1-0 win.
