No. 8 Stanford (2-1, 0-1) dropped a 3-1 decision (30-19, 24-30, 30-24, 30-18) to UCLA after finishing second at the UCSB/Elephant Bar Tournament. The Cardinal was led by sophomore Evan Romero, who finished with 22 kills. Freshman Charley Henrikson came in and recorded a .429 hitting percentage and finished with eight kills.
Sophomore Kawika Shoji recorded 50 assists in the loss to give him two matches in a row with fifty or more assists. Shoji recorded 51 assists in the Cardinal loss to Alberta in the UCSB/Elephant Bar championship. Senior Matt Ceran finished with 11 kills and recorded a team-high 14 digs.
Henrikson also finished with a team-high five blocks in the loss to the Bruins.
The Bruins were led by sophomore Garrett Muagututia, who finished with 15 kills and hit .345 for the match. UCLA also got a big lift from redshirt junior Jamie Diefenbach, who finished with 12 kills and hit .750 for the match. Junior Matt Wade finished with a team-high 52 assists.
The Cardinal return to action when they take the court tomorrow at Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine to take on the Anteaters. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
