Deason and Nguyen Advance In Doubles At Freeman Memorial

STANFORD, Calif.- Senior Whitney Deason and junior Jessica Nguyen earned a spot in Sunday's doubles semifinals at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships on the second day of competition in Las Vegas, Nev.

The duo defeated USC's Amanda Fink and Cristala Andrews 8-1 in the quarterfinal round to reach the semis. Another Stanford doubles team, senior Lejla Hodzic and freshman Jennifer Yen, defeated Arizona State's Micaela Hein and Jessica Leitch 8-3 in the second flight division.

The third Cardinal doubles team of freshman Hilary Barte and senior Celia Durkin fell to UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore 8-2 in the consolation bracket.

In singles action, Deason upset Georgia Tech's Whitney McCray 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before falling to North Carolina's Katrina Tsang 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. All four of Deason's matches in the first two days went to three sets.

Three Cardinal players dropped their quarterfinal singles match. Durkin was downed by Tsang 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, Nguyen fell to USC's Fink 6-3, 6-2 and Barte came up short 6-0, 6-2 against Florida's Csilla Borsanyi.

Yen lost her quarterfinal singles match in the second flight division, falling to Arizona State's Lauren Megale 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Hodzic posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Oregon's Mimi Songsermsawas in the second flight consolation division.
