BERKELEY, Calif. - The No.1 Cardinal suffered its first defeat of the season in Berkeley tonight against No.5 California. The teams were tied going into the final two rotations but Cal went on to win 347.250-346.750, leaving Stanford just .500 points behind Cal.
In the absence of senior David Sender and junior Sho Nakamori, who are both currently training at the Olympic Training Center, Stanford received outstanding performances from its freshman class.
Freshman Alex Buscaglia was the top performer for the Cardinal, nabbing victories in vault (15.750) and floor exercise (15.550) and tying for first (14.900) in high bar with Cal's Kyle Bunthuwong.
Freshman Ryan Lieberman added a first place finish on the parallel bars (15.150) and freshman Tim Gentry tied for first with Cal's Tyler Block in still rings (14.900).
Stanford will return home on January 26 for competition at the 2008 Stanford Open at 7:00 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
