MONTEREY BAY, Calif.- The Stanford Sailing Team got the spring season off to a good start this past weekend, competing in the North Points 1 and 2 Regattas hosted by CSU Monterey Bay. The Cardinal sent two teams for the first regatta on Saturday to compete in the thirteen-team fleet of northern California schools. Stanford Varsity was Megan Grove with Hayley Tobin in A division and Jonah Greenberger with Mariana Beardsworth in B division. Stanford JV, which competed in the same fleet as varsity, was composed of Graham Todd with Sarah Schoknecht in A division and Ben Pedrick with Catherine Cu in B division.
The conditions on Saturday proved to be rather challenging for Cardinal in its first weekend of spring competition, as light winds and choppy water prevailed most of the day. Completing five races on short windward-leeward courses, varsity finished up fifth overall, and JV captured third overall. In A division, Grove/Tobin sailed their way to 3rd and Todd/Schoknecht had some up and down races, finishing the day in 5th. In B division, the senior pairing of Greenberger/Beardsworth placed 6th while the top performance came from Pedrick/Cu, who got 2nd in the division. In general, the team fared well in difficult conditions with little practice yet under their belt.
The Cardinal brought a wholly different team to Monterey Bay on Sunday to compete in the North Points 2 Regatta. Twelve teams showed up to sail six races in similar conditions to the first day. Having learned from the successes of their teammates the previous day, the Cardinal sailors went out looking to capitalize on their chances to make gains wherever they could around the short courses. In A division, Leigh Hammel and Beth Hoover sailed a very consistent series to finish 2nd in their division. With one race out of the top 4, these two definitely know what it takes to compete at the next level. B division saw the return of Cameron Bell, who was away in the fall. Crewing in B division for her first regatta was Ale Lynberg, a recent walk-on who shows a great deal of promise. The pairing of Bell/Lynberg was able to put together top five finishes nearly every race to secure fifth in their division.
Overall, the weekend was a major success. Having gotten comfortable in the boats again, the team can now focus on their goals for the season. Looking ahead, this weekend will be the first time the team will travel to the east coast as the coed team is set to compete at the College of Charleston while the women's team will look to improve upon their third place ranking competing at the University of South Florida.
