Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's lacrosse looked to remain perfect in a rare Wednesday night game at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium and was able to accomplish their task with a 13-7 victory over UC Davis. The Cardinal (3-0, 2-0 MPSF) were able to jump on the Aggies for 10 first half goals in the victory and never trailed in the entire game. Sophomore Claire Hubbard scored three goals on the evening and added one assist, giving her four goals and seven assists on the season.
Before the crowd even got comfortable, Stanford was able to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Junior Jamie Nesbitt scored one minute into the action and senior Megan McClain followed a minute later. The Aggies fought back with two goals from Katie McGovern, but sophomore Dana Lindsay and freshman Sarah Flynn responded with goals to bring the Cardinal lead to two goals at 4-2.
Hubbard began a Cardinal barrage with three goals in a three minute span to open up a close game late in the first half. Hubbard found the net in the 20th, 21st and 23rd minutes to push the Stanford lead to 7-2. Goals by freshman Karen Nesbitt and redshirt sophomore Bess Siegfried helped the Cardinal push out to a 10-4 at the half. In a season that has seen the Cardinal start slow in the first half and turn it on in the second, this was the first game in which the team was able to jump on an opponent early.
The game tightened up defensively in the second half with only six goals scored total on both sides. Freshman Leslie Foard and McClain added their second goals and redshirt freshman Charity Fluharty scored the first goal of her collegiate carrier to complete the Cardinal scoring for the evening. Senior Daphne Patterson added two assists for the Cardinal, to give her three on the season to go with her seven goals.
Senior Laura Shane was stellar once again in net, recording ten saves and stopping a lot of shots at point blank range, limiting the Aggies to only two goals on nine free position attempts.
Stanford will return to the field on Sunday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Dallas, Tex. to face third-ranked Duke. This will be the first road game for the Cardinal, who have played every game so far this season at Laird Q. Cagan stadium.
