Stanford, Calif. - Stanford continued its quest for a fourth straight U.S. Collegiate title with its third victory in a row to start 2008 by dominating Alabama-Birmingham on the first day of back-to-back meets between the teams at the Avery Aquatic Center. Stanford swept the four competitions against the Blazers and have yet to lose a routine in 2008.
Melissa Knight, Sara Lowe and Courtney Stewart started the meet off with a dominating win in the trio competition as the trio scored 92.167 points. The next closest competitors were teammates Poppy Carlig, Debbie Chen and Taylor Durand with a score of 87.833.
Lowe and Stewart were excellent in the duet as well as the long-time swimming partners hooked up for a score of 93.333, while Carlig and Knight checked in with 88.833.
Lowe was also a winner in the solo competition with 93.833 points.A team of Carlig, Knight, Chen, Stewart, Durand, Erin Bell, Corinne Smith and Gayle Lee finished comfortably out front in the team competition with a score of 93.333.
The victory was Stanford's second in as many days after the Cardinal captured the William & Mary Invitational on Saturday.
"Today went well," said assistant coach Alison Bartosik. "We had a great crowd, and we continued to improve in all of our routines."
Stanford will host Alabama-Birmingham for the second straight day on Sunday, February 3. (9 am, PT). The teams will compete in figures and B elements only.
