OAKLAND, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford men's gymnastics team captured the 2008 Pacific Coast Collegiate Classic tonight at the Oakland Convention Center, with a team score of 361.650. The score, Stanford's highest of the year, was good enough to defeat No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 6 Michigan, No. 5 Illinois, No. 4 California, and No. 13 Air Force.
Stanford needed every point it could get, as Oklahoma finished in a close second with 359.800, followed by California, Michigan, Illinois, and Air Force. The Cardinal took first as a team in three events: floor exercise (61.000), pommel horse (58.350), and rings (62.500).
The Cardinal had two individual event champions as senior Chris Harper won pommel horse after recording a 15.400 and senior David Sender won still rings with an outstanding 16.350. Freshman Josh Dixon placed second in floor exercise notching a 15.600, and redshirt junior Sho Nakamori and junior Bryant Hadden tied for second in parallel bars posting a 14.900.
The first place finish improves the Cardinal to 14-1 on the season. Stanford will next face Michigan on March 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich. at 1 p.m. EST.
