Berkeley, Calif. - Stanford women's lacrosse looked to rebound against California in the rainy weather Saturday afternoon, but a late California run led the Golden Bears to an 11-9 victory at Memorial Stadium. The Cardinal was led by sophomore Dana Lindsay, who had three goals in the loss. Senior Megan McClain had two goals in the match and senior goalkeeper Laura Shane had 10 more saves.
The Cardinal (3-2, 2-1 MPSF) got on the board quickly when McClain scored a goal one minute into the match and freshman Sarah Flynn scored a minute later. This gave the Cardinal a quick 2-0 lead. California attacker Madeline Dale quickly answered though and it was 2-1 Stanford just four minutes in.
The scoring barrage continued as Lindsay scored her first goal of the day when a streaking Maris Perlman found Julie Christy cutting upfield, and Christy found Lindsay right next to the net for a shot at point-blank range. Stanford's nemesis of the day though was Golden Bear senior attacker Danni Zuratow scored two of her five goals on the day and the game was tied at three at the 20:49 mark.
The Bears took their first lead of the day when Dale scored again after an 11 minute scoring draught. At the 9:05 mark of the first half, Cal led 4-3. Lindsay scored her second goal of the match when she intercepted an errant Golden Bear pass and scored on a 1-1 opportunity in front of the Cal net. With this goal the score was once again tied.
Freshman Karen Nesbitt continued her strong season by scoring right before the half to give the Cardinal a 5-4 halftime lead. Nesbitt made a great spin move in front of the net to free her from a defender and finished the goal with a shot to the left.
After the break, Lindsay scored from point blank range just two minutes into the second half and the Cardinal had their second two goal lead of the day. Zuratow responded again though when Shane was forced to leave the net after fielding a groundball. Zuratow stole Shane's lob pass and fired at an open net to cut the lead in half to 6-5.
After Alex Tickner tied the score at seven, redshirt sophomore Bess Siegfried got into the action by giving the Cardinal the lead again with 14 minutes left to play. After that goal though, the Golden Bears scored three goals in a row and took control en route to their 11-9 victory.
The Cardinal will attempt to rebound at home, when they return to Cagan Stadium to face Notre Dame on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 1:00 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on CSTV.
