LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Seven of the nine gymnasts Stanford sent to the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas are advancing from Thursday's preliminary competition to Saturday's finals. Only Team Chevron has more participants in the finals, with eight men advancing. The Cardinal has the highest number of gymnasts from any single NCAA team advancing to the finals.

Those athletes advancing are: senior David Sender, junior Bryant Hadden, freshmen Tim Gentry, Ryan Lieberman, Josh Dixon, redshirt junior Sho Nakamori, and redshirt senior Dylan Carney.

Sender posted a 15.450 in floor exercise, second only to 2004 Olympic gold medalist in all-around, Paul Hamm, who scored a 16.000 on the event. That score, combined with Sender's other event scores, gave him an all-around total of 87.800, good enough for fourth place in preliminaries.

Hadden placed 16th overall, with his highest score being a 14.350 on the vault and his highest place at 18th, with a 14.300 on parallel bars.

Gentry, Lieberman, and Dixon placed 18th (tie), 22nd, and 34th respectively. Gentry tied for eighth on still rings (14.850) and Lieberman placed 10th on parallel bars (14.650). Dixon placed high in two events, floor exercise (9th) and vault (6th), propelling him into Saturday's finals. Dixon's performance in vault (15.950) was also his highest score of the season so far.

Senior Eli Alcarez will not be advancing to Saturday, but he did record his best score on vault so far this season, notching a 15.200.

On Saturday, the top 42 athletes who have qualified will compete in the third and final session. Final all-around and individual rankings will be based on combined scores from both days. The results of the 2008 Winter Cup Challenge will be used to select seven members for the Senior National Team. Four of those seven athletes will be determined using the Men's Program Committee (MPC) approved National Team Points Program, and three will be selected by the MPC.
