Gauthier And Silver Lead No. 2 Stanford To 12-9 Win Over No. 7 San Diego State

March 1, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford captured the front end of this weekend's back-to-back games Saturday afternoon, getting hat tricks from Jacquelyn Gauthier and Lauren Silver on the way to a 12-9 win over No. 7 San Diego State.

The Cardinal (10-2, 2-0 MPSF) used goals from seven different players to hand the Aztecs (13-2, 0-1 MPSF) their first MPSF loss of the season. Besides Gauthier and Silver's contributions on the scoreboard, freshman Kim Krueger scored a pair of goals while single goals were registered by Kira Hillman, Kelsey Holshouser, Megan May, and Heather West.

On the other side of the tank, goalkeeper Amber Oland stopped five shots and held the Aztecs to just one goal in the opening period, allowing Stanford to jump out to a 3-1 lead and set the tone in the contest.

Stanford scored three times in each period, building a 6-4 halftime lead, then extending it to 9-6 after holding San Diego State to just a pair of scores in the third period.

From there, the Cardinal were firmly in control of the contest, as Kim Krueger's goal at the 3:15 mark of the fourth period put the Aztecs in an inescapable 12-7 hole. San Diego State also scored twice in the final 40 seconds of the contest.

Stanford returns to Avery Stadium Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., hosting No. 10 Arizona State to conclude the weekend.
