March 22, 2008

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - No. 10 Stanford returned to the field after the 13 day finals break, but was unable to handle the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins in a 15-7 loss. Senior Daphne Patterson led the Cardinal with three goals and senior Laura Shane finished with 17 saves, which matched a season-high.

Maryland senior Dana Dobbie scored seven goals, including five in a row in the second half to make a close game out of reach. It snapped Stanford's three-game winning streak and ended a stretch where seven of the first nine games have been at home.

The Terrapins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after only four minutes of action and looked like they were going to gain control of the match. The Cardinal fought back with goals by Dana Lindsay and Charity Fluharty and the lead was cut in half to 4-2. Maryland powered back though behind three more goals to end the half with a 7-2 lead.

As they have all year long, the Cardinal made sound adjustments at halftime and rallied back behind three goals and cut the Terrapin lead to 7-5. Stanford kept Maryland off the board for nearly 11 minutes and momentum was gaining on their sideline. Dobbie ended up scoring five of her seven goals in a six minute stretch in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Bess Siegfried was able to add to the Stanford cause, but it was not enough and the Cardinal fell by the final score of 15-7.

Stanford will return to the field next Tuesday, Mar. 25 when they take on William & Mary. The face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. PST.
