Complete Finals Results
Stanford swam strong in the relays, but could not match their prelim times in the individual swims to finish fifth after the first day of the NCAA Championships from the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Arizona leads after day one with 137 points, followed by Texas with 116, California with 112, and Auburn with 97. The Cardinal sit within striking distance in fifth place with 93 points.
In the final swimming event of the evening Stanford posted its best finish taking third place in the 400 medley relay. The team of , , , and finished with a school record time of 3:05.43 earning 32 points. Arizona won the relay with a time of 3:04.43.
In the first event of the evening, Stanford took fourth place in the 200 free relay. The team of , Staab, , and Godsoe swam a season best time of 1:17.47. The finish earned the Cardinal 30 points. Auburn earned the full 40 points by winning the relay in a time of 1:15.66.
Stanford's top individual finish of the evening came from in the 200 IM where he finished seventh. Cass finished with a time of 1:45.69 earning 12 points for the Cardinal. Darian Townsend of Arizona won the event with a time of 1:42.72.
In the 500 free, took eighth place in the championship final to score 11 points for the Cardinal. Beal's time of 4:16.43 was just slower than his prelim time, which was the third fastest in the event in Stanford history.
In the consolation final, finished 14th with a time of 4:19.42. His finish earned three points for Stanford. Sebastien Rouault of Georgia won the event with a time of 4:09.48.
Without a swimmer in the championship final of the 50 free, Stanford turned its attention to the consolation final. In this heat, Stanford picked up points from Staab who finished 13th with a time of 19.68 seconds and who finished 16th with a time of 19.77 seconds.
In diving, finished 31st in the prelims and did not advance to the final of the 1-meter competition.
Stanford returns to the pool tomorrow morning when they compete in the prelims of 200 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, and the 3-meter diving competition.
