STANFORD, Calif.- No. 5 Stanford dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 13 Arizona State in Tempe on Friday afternoon to fall to 12-4 overall.
It was Arizona State's first win over Stanford in 24 years, as the Sun Devils improve to 12-3. Stanford is saddled with four losses for the first time since 1987.
Arizona State swept the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead and picked up singles wins at the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 positions.
In singles, Laila Abdala's 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Celia Durkin at the No. 3 spot extended Arizona State's lead to 2-0.
Both squads then traded victories at the top two slots, with Hilary Barte posting a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 before Kelcy McKenna put Arizona State up 3-1 following a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jessica Nguyen.
Whitney Deason followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) decision over Jessica Leitch at the No. 5 position, representing her 100th career singles victory.
Carolyn McVeigh knotted the match at 3-3 with a straight-set win at No. 6 before Micaela Hein outlasted Lindsay Burdette 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at the No. 4 position.
Stanford wraps up its road trip tomorrow at Arizona. The match is slated for noon.
