March 29, 2008

Box Score

No. 10 Stanford women's lacrosse yielded a goal to James Madison senior Julie Stone as time expired in their 10-9 loss Saturday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex in Harrisonburg, Va. Senior Daphne Patterson once again led the way for the Cardinal as she scored three goals in the match. Senior Megan McClain and sophomore Dana Lindsay each scored two goals in defeat.

Stone scored five goals for the Dukes, including the game-winner, which dropped Stanford to 6-5 on the season. The Cardinal were trailing by five goals with nine minutes remaining, but made a furious comeback bid that fell just short.

The Cardinal forced James Madison into five turnovers and scored five goals off those turnovers in an eight minute span. Junior Maris Perlman started the comeback, forcing a turnover by JMU senior Annie Wagner, but was unable to come up with a goal with 11:10 remaining. Stanford also was unsuccessful in two proceeding free-position attempts, but sophomore Julie Christy started the run with a goal at the 8:37 mark of the second half.

Lindsay continued the run with a goal of her own and after Daphne Patterson scored her third goal of the game, the deficit was down to 9-7 with 5:04 remaining in the game.

James Madison controlled the ensuing draw, but lost possession on an errant pass, and after Patterson assisted McClain's first goal of the match, the game was 9-8 with just 3:55 left in the game. Freshman Karen Nesbitt and Katherine Fox each had shots go wide at the 1:55 and 1:12 mark's of the second half, but McClain tallied her second goal of the match to tied the score at 9 with just 34 seconds remaining.

The Dukes controlled the next draw and quickly called timeout to setup a final play of regulation. JMU senior Lucy Lynch worked the ball behind the Stanford net and delivered a pass to Stone at the top of the 12-meter fan. Stone shot as time expired and found the net to give the Dukes the victory.

Stanford will return home when they next take field and will host the St. Mary's Gaels at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium on Friday, Apr. 4. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
