MONTEREY, Calif. - After scoring 31 goals in a doubleheader a day ago, the second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team took its offensive show on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating the CSU Monterey Bay Otters, 19-9, in Monterey. Four of the nine Cardinal players to find the net Sunday posted hat tricks as Stanford improved to 18-3 on the year.
Jacquelyn Gauthier, Kira Hillman, Alex Koran, and Chelsea Smith-Carmichael all registered three goals in the victory, while Kelly Eaton and Lauren Silver added two apiece, and Jenna Gunderson, Kelsey Holshouser, and Megan May all added singles.
Kim Hall got the nod in the cage for Stanford, responding with six saves and keeping the Otters out of the cage in the first period, which allowed the Cardinal to race to a 7-0 lead.
Stanford went on to score nine straight goals to start the contest, including seven in the first period. Gauthier nabbed her hat trick in the opening eight minutes, while Silver scored her two goals in that same span.
The Otters finally got on the board at the 5:35 mark of the second period, yet the Cardinal, behind goals from Eaton and Hillman, and a pair from Smith Carmichael, kept rolling to a 13-3 halftime advantage.
Holshouser opened the scoring in the second half with a goal 28 seconds into the third period, and following a CSUMB goal, Koran and Gunderson kept the Cardinal well ahead.
Hillman and Koran then put the finishing touches on their respective hat tricks with goals in the fourth period.
Stanford remains on the road for a pair of MPSF contests next weekend, first visiting CS Northridge for a 3 p.m. contest Friday April 4, then meeting up with No. 3 USC the following day for a 12 p.m. battle.
