March 22-23; Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA
The coed team opened the longest east coast trip for the Cardinal sailors at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race against competition from three strong districts. Senior skippers Eddie Conrad and Evan Brown were joined by freshman skipper Cole Hatton along with senior Sarah Schoknecht, juniors Kelly McKenna, Taylor Grimes, and freshman Hannah Burroughs crewing. The team raced seven other teams in a range of conditions, including a windy southerly to finish the day on Saturday. After some disappointing finishes throughout the two round robins, Stanford needed a win against previously undefeated St. Mary's College of Maryland to secure a berth to the final four. In dominating fashion, the Cardinal team racers got off the line in a winning combination and held it all the way around the course. The Cardinal managed to finish fourth overall, bringing a great deal of excitement into their training week in Charleston, SC where they met the remainder of the coed and women's teams Sunday night.

Following a productive week in Charleston with the entire team, a large contingent of the Cardinal sailors went to the South Designate 5 in Santa Barbara. Sailing for the first Stanford team were freshmen Graham Todd and Ale Lynberg in A division and juniors Cam Bell and Catherine Cu. Stanford 2 saw freshmen Ben Pedrick and Hayley Tobin in A division and seniors Jonah Greenberger and Mariana Beardsworth in B division. The conditions in Santa Barbara varied a great deal throughout the weekend, as the twenty-six competing teams saw everything from two to thirty knots. Ten races were completed in total, with Stanford taking both sixth and ninth overall. Todd and Lynberg sailed consistently to finish third in A division, while their teammates Bell and Cu sailed well but ran into some trouble with a DNF and an OCS to finish 12th in B division. The second team of Pedrick and Tobin sailed to ninth in A division, while Greenberger and Beardsworth sailed a consistent series to finish 4th in B division.

The third ranked women's team went into their final chance to see much of their top-ranked East Coast competition this weekend at the Brad Dellenbaugh Women's Intersectional with confidence following a week of intense training in similar conditions to Brown. Competing in A division for the Cardinal were senior Evan Brown with junior crew Kelly McKenna, and sophomore co-skipper and crew Megan Grove. Junior Taylor Grimes and senior Sarah Schoknecht competed in B division for the Cardinal women. Cold temps and stiff, shifty breezes gave the women some difficulty throughout the weekend. Entering Sunday in fourth place, a mere seven points out of second place, the experienced team hoped for a long day to separate themselves and move up in the results. After a few races in a light and challenging breeze, the competitors were forced to wait until late in the afternoon to finish the event. Winning the final race in B division gave Grimes and Schoknecht third in B division, losing a tie-breaker for second place. Grove went in to skipper the final race in A division, as the threesome finished 11th in that division. The Cardinal women finished up 5th overall, a result they know they can improve upon as championship season approaches.

The Southern New England Team Race, co-hosted by the US Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College on the Thames River, saw the deepest field in college sailing team racing so far this year. With eighteen teams competing, Stanford got to truly test its mettle for the final time prior to the Pacific Coast Championships. Senior Eddie Conrad, junior TJ Tullo, sophomore Peter Stemler, and freshman Cole Hatton skippered, with senior Carrie Denning, sophomore Leigh Hammel, and freshman Hannah Burroughs crewing. Senior Beth Hoover, nearly off the injured reserve, spent the weekend taking film for the team to review. After a slow start on Saturday, the team went 4-4 on Saturday, just missing out on the championship round of the top 10 teams Sunday. Returning on Sunday glad to at the very least get some good practice in, the Cardinal went 6-1, winning the consolation round. Overall the regatta was a good learning experience for the predominantly young team, and they look to improve upon this result before championship season rolls around.
