April 20, 2008

Box Score

No. 19 Stanford women's lacrosse started strong against No. 20 Denver on Sunday afternoon, but nine goals by Megan Carver and Karen Morton were too much in the 13-9 defeat. The Cardinal (8-8, 3-2 MPSF) dropped their second in a row, but produced a balanced attack, with players notching goals. Sophomore Claire Hubbard led the way with two goals and three assists and senior goalkeeper Laura Shane finished with four saves.

The first half started favorably for the Cardinal as they scored the first four goals of the match in the first 10 minutes of the match. Sophomore Dana Lindsay and redshirt sophomore Bess Siegfried scored the first two goals for Stanford in the opening seven minutes. Both of the first two goals were assisted by Claire Hubbard as the Cardinal got off to their fast start. Freshman Sarah Flynn and Hubbard scored the next two goals for the Cardinal. The half began to unravel at that point as the Pioneers scored the final six goals of the half. Ali Flury, Megan Carver and Karen Morton each scored two goals during the run and at the half the Pioneers led by the score of 6-4.

The Cardinal returned from the locker room and got off to another hot start as they did at the start of the game. Stanford scored the first three goals of the second half and regained the lead at 7-6 at the 23:40 mark of the final period. The Pioneers responded to the Cardinal run again in the second half as they were able to score seven goals in a row this time and took a 13-7 lead 5:53 remaining in the game. Late goals by Amanda Schwab and Daphne Patterson cut the final deficit to 13-9, but weren't enough to come back in the high altitude at Denver, Colo.

It was only the third victory for the Pioneers all-time against the Cardinal and the first such victory at home. The loss dropped the Cardinal to 3-2 in MPSF conference play and 8-8 overall. Stanford has had a .500 or better for the entirety of the 2008 season.

Stanford will wrap up their regular season next weekend when they travel to Hanover, NH. and take on Dartmouth in another out of conference matchup. The match is scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 27 and will start at 12:00 p.m. EST.
