April 4, 2008

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - With all of the ranked opponents coming to Cagan Stadium this season, big leads for the Cardinal have been few and far between this year. That changed Friday night when the Cardinal erupted for 13 first half goals en route to a 20-3 blowout win over the Saint Mary's Gaels. The Cardinal was led by sophomore Amanda Schwab and freshman Emily Layden, who had four goals apiece in the victory. It also marked the debut of freshman goalkeeper Annie Read, who recorded six saves in the win.

The Cardinal scored the first seven goals of the game and never looked back as they dominated from the opening tip. Amy Stillwell got the Cardinal started two minutes into the match and Leslie Foard followed just a minute later. Schwab scored three of her four goals in a nine minute span, and after Foard put home her second goal of the night, the Cardinal had their 7-0 lead.

Stanford scored five more in a row after the Gaels got on the board, with Layden scoring two in the burst to give the Cardinal a 12-1 lead. After Layden scored her third goal, the Cardinal entered the locker room with a 13-2 lead.

The second half began the same way as the first one as Stanford scored the first five goals of the half, with two of them coming off Bess Siegfried's stick. Senior Daphne Patterson got into the act in the last portion of the game, by scoring two goals in the game's final 15 minutes.

The Gaels were led by P.J. Hainley, who scored two goals on the evening. The Cardinal outshot the Gaels 36-23, including 23-15 in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Laura Shane recorded six saves in the victory and was able to get her first rest of the season after playing in all of the first 11 games.

The Cardinal will return to the field on Sunday, Apr. 6 as they host the No. 11 Boston University Terriers at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and it will be the final game for Stanford's seven graduating seniors.
