Stanford, Calif. - No. 8 Stanford men's volleyball played at home for the first time in over a month Friday night, and swept away the Tritons of UC San Diego 3-0 (30-20, 35-33, 30-20) to score a big home victory. Sophomore Evan Romero led the way once again with 21 kills and had an attack percentage of .378 in the victory. Freshman Spencer McLachlin recorded 11 kills in the win.
The first game was handled fairly easy by the Cardinal after jumping out to a 10-4 lead and never looking back in the frame. Sophomore Kawika Shoji had a big first game and finished the match with 45 assists to lead the Cardinal. Stanford ended up winning the first game 30-20 and took the early 1-0 lead.
The second game proved to be the most taxing for Stanford, having to go deep into the bonus to finally pull out the 35-33 win. The Cardinal was on the brink of losing the frame, but Romero saved Stanford with a kill to tie the score at 32. Garrett Werner finished off the frame on a pass from Shoji and Stanford had a commanding 2-0 lead after the first two games.
With the momentum of the second game in hand, the Cardinal breezed through the third game to sweep the match and clinch the victory. McLachlin led the Cardinal in digs with 11 to finish with a double-double on the evening.
The Cardinal will return to the court Saturday, Apr. 5 when they host the No. 4 Long Beach State 49ers at Burnham Pavilion. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. With the heavy amount of events at Stanford on Saturday, fans are encouraged to show up early in order to avoid parking traffic.
