Tempe, Ariz.- Stanford got the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships underway with the heptathlon and decathlon events, which completed on Saturday. The Cardinal were led by Lauren Stewart who finished fourth in the heptathlon and Josh Hustedt who finished third in the decathlon.
Saturday, Stewart climbed up the standings from sixth to fourth with a personal best score of 5,440 points. She recorded impressive results in the long jump where she had a season best jump of 19-3 ¼ and the javelin where she recorded a career best of 120-4.
Also faring well for Stanford was freshman Whitney Liehr who finished just behind Stewart in fifth with a collegiate best score of 5,186 points. Her score was an all-time freshman record at Stanford. Liehr recorded a collegiate best throw in the javelin with a toss of 118-8.
The other Stanford competitors in the heptathlon were Kara Bennett who finished 11th with 4,799 points and Lexie Spiranac who finished 16th with 4,468 points. Both scores were collegiate bests for the Cardinal multi-event athletes.
For the men Stanford was led by Hustedt who finished third with 7,181 points. Hustedt recorded a season best of 4:45.42 in the 1,500 meters on Saturday to hang onto his third place position.
Also competing in the decathlon for Stanford was Corey Dysick who finished 11th with a score of 5,598 points. Dysick had collegiate bests in the 110 hurdles (15.21 seconds), the discus (115-10), and the 1,500 meters (4:50.45) but did not move up the standings because he no heighted in the pole vault.
The rest of the events at the Pac-10 Championships will be contested Fri.-Sat. May 16-17 in Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinal are off to a strong start with the women in a tie for second place with nine points and the men in third place with six points.
