American Record Falls At Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational

Stanford Men's All-Time Records

Stanford, Calif.- The Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational has developed a reputation as one of the top distance carnivals in the United States and the 2008 version was no exception. For the 13th time the meet was contested at Cobb Track and Angell Field and for the third time it saw an American Record fall.

Sunday it was Shalane Flanagan of Nike in the 10,000 meters who broke the six year-old record set by Deena Kastor also at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in 2002. Flanagan's time of 30:34.49 was a 16 second improvement over the record for the former North Carolina star competing in the event for the first time.

The American Record was the highlight of the meet, but fast times were the theme throughout the day.

Stanford's was the Cardinal star of the day when she ran a personal best time of 4:16.13 in the 1,500 meters. Centrowitz finished seventh in the race full of talented post-collegaites, but her time was good enough to spring into second on the 2008 NCAA list. Only Darcia Barr of Arkansas who finished fourth in the same heat with a time of 4:13.77 has run faster this season. The time also moved Centrowitz into sixth place on the all-time Stanford 1,500 meters list.

Also competing in the top section of the 1,500 meters for Stanford was who finished 12th in a time of 4:21.25. While it was not a personal best for Follmar, it was an impressive run as she showed she had overcome last week's bloody fall at the Penn Relays.

In the Payton Jordan 10,000 meters, finished third with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 33:19.42. Gits, a freshman also ran the sixth fastest time ever for a United States junior and the fifth fastest 10,000 meters in Stanford history. The result would have been outstanding on its own, but was made even more remarkable considering Gits lost one shoe 5,000 meters into the race and completed the final 5,000 meters with just a sock covering her foot.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase finished ninth with a season best time of 10:08.84. Her time moved her into first place on the Pac-10 list and third in the NCAA's.

In the top section of the women's 5,000 meters, recent Stanford grad, ran a personal best time of 15:22.51, which is the third best time by an American this year.

In the sprints Stanford was led by who hit a regional qualifying mark in the 100 meters with a time of 11.70 seconds.

finished first in the 400 meters with a collegiate best time of 55.40 seconds. She also doubled in the 200 meters where she finished third with a wind-aided time of 24.97 seconds.

The Stanford hammer throwers carried the weight in the field events when and both recorded personal bests. Goodbody's throw of 199-04 moved her into second place all-time on the Stanford hammer list. Yunghans' toss of 184-11 was the eighth best in Stanford history.

In the long jump improved her regional mark with a season best when she jumped 20-1 3/4. Matthew also acheived her second regional mark of the day when she leaped 19-10 3/4. Also just missing a regional mark was who jumped a personal best 19-5 1/4.

There were several world class events on the men's side as well. In the 5,000 meters, last year's world champion at 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters, Bernard Lagat of Nike used a blazing last lap to win in a time of 13:16.29.

In the Kim McDonald Memorial 10,000 meters Craig Mottram of Australia took the meet title with a time of 27:34.48, which just missed the Australian national record.

The Stanford men were led by the 1,500 meter runners where there were several season bests. finished fourth with a season best time of 3:40.96. He just edged his teammate who finished fifth with a season best time of 3:41.08. Both moved into the top-10 on the NCAA list with their efforts.

Also faring well in the 1,500 meters were who ran a personal best time of 3:44.81 and who ran a season best time of 3:49.55.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman ran a regional qualifying time of 13:59.12. In addition fellow freshmen (14:26.20) and (14:27.34) achieved personal bests.

improved his season best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:03.27. Also with a personal best was with a time of 9:09.88.

In the field events Stanford was led by who won the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 24-5 ½. Also faring well was who won the shot put with a season best toss of 56-6 ¾.

The Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational is the final meet of the regular season for the Cardinal. Stanford will now turn its attention to the Pac-10 Championships, which begin May 9-10 when the combined events are contested. The rest of the competition will take place May16-17 in Tempe, Ariz.
