Cardinal Rallies In Second Half, Downs Central Michigan 3-2

STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford erupted for three second-half scores in a 3-2 victory over Central Michigan on Sunday morning in Ann Arbor, Mich., closing out a three-game, five-day road trip with its first win of the year.

Trailing 2-0 early on, the Cardinal (1-3) received goals from three different players in the second half to pick up the victory.

Central Michigan (0-2) held a 10-8 advantage in shots and 9-7 edge in penalty corners.

The second-half surge has been a theme for Stanford so far, as the club has scored four of its seven goals and tallied 19 of its 23 shot attempts over the final 35 minutes.

On Sunday, the Chippewas took a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute when Brooke Sihota converted on a bouncing direct shot in the corner from Kim Erasmus. In the 24th minute, Samantha Sandham scored unassisted when she dribbled through the circle and found the net. Those scores gave Central Michigan a 2-0 halftime lead and helped trigger a 6-2 first-half shot edge.

But Stanford owned a 6-4 shot advantage in the second half, resulting in three goals. Sophomore Xanthe Travlos cut the Central Michigan lead to 2-1 at the 36:20 mark, scoring unassisted for her first goal of the year when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle and beat Chippewa keeper Kahla Schwall low in the cage.

Two minutes later, sophomore Camille Gandhi scored her first goal of the season when she converted on a redirect high off a defender's stick. Senior Hillary Braun and junior Jennifer Luther were credited with assists.

Junior Rachel Mozenter put home the game-winner in the 62nd minute, making a run up the right side and firing a quick shot into the cage.

Gandhi led the Cardinal with four shots while Mozenter chipped in with three.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alessandra Moss picked up the win in relief, making one save while holding Central Michigan scoreless over the final 43:36.

Stanford hosts Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 13, at noon in its next match.
