STANFORD, Calif.- No. 4 Iowa used two second half goals to overcome a 2-1 Stanford lead to defeat the Cardinal, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
The Hawkeyes (3-2, 0-0 Big Ten) outshot the Cardinal 25-12, but did not take the lead for good until the 60th minute when Sarah Pergrine scored off a rebound.
Stanford (1-4, 0-0) took a 2-1 lead early in the second half when Stephanie Byrne scored her second goal of the game. Byrne's second goal was setup by a Katherine Donner assist, giving the Cardinal the momentum.
However, Iowa quickly responded on a goal by Lauren Pfeiffer just two minutes after Stanford had taken the lead. Her goal was assisted by Tricia Dean. Pfeiffer led the attack for Iowa totaling 13 shots throughout the game.
The deciding goal was netted by Sarah Pergrine who came off the bench to score on her only shot of the game.
The two goals by Byrne were her third and fourth of the season. She leads the Cardinal in that category. Her first goal came off a rebound in the seventh minute to tie the game at 1-1. Byrne took just three shots to score her two goals.
In goal, Alessandra Moss totaled 13 saves for the Cardinal with several coming of the spectacular variety.
Stanford will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 14 when they host Albany at 3:30 pm.
