Big First Half Propels No. 3 Stanford To 10-2 Victory Over No. 11 Pacific

Oct. 5, 2008

STOCKTON, Calif. - Although it had been two weeks since its last game, the No. 3 Stanford men's water polo team showed little sign of rust, blitzing No. 11 Pacific for eight first-half goals and employing a stingy defense in a 10-2 victory Sunday in Stockton. Drac Wigo led the way with a season-high six goals and Jimmie Sandman stopped nine shots as the Cardinal improved to 10-1 on the year.

Stanford will return to action next weekend, traveling to Southern California for the SoCal Tournament, to be held on the campuses of Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. The Cardinal, seeded third in the draw, open up group play Saturday morning in Malibu against Princeton at 10:40 a.m. Depending on the outcome of that game, Stanford will move on to face either LMU or Pacific in the afternoon.

Sunday, along with Wigo's six goals, Stanford's four remaining goals were scored by Chris Jacobson, Jeffrey Schwimer, Peter Sefton, and Sage Wright. On the defensive end, Sandman's nine saves highlighted an effort that limited the Tigers to just two goals on the day, and no goals in the final period.

The Cardinal's opening rush included five goals in the contest's opening eight minutes, against just one for the Tigers. With Pacific on the ropes early, Stanford kept up the assault on both ends, scoring three goals in the second period while also holding the Tigers scoreless to take an 8-1 lead at halftime.

While Pacific cut the Stanford lead to 8-2 after three periods, Stanford quickly slammed the door on any faint hopes of a comeback, scoring two unanswered goals in the final period to close things up.
