McVeigh, Hansen Reach Doubles Final At Saint Mary's Invitational

STANFORD, Calif.- The Stanford women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Moraga, Calif., highlighted by a doubles final appearance in the red bracket.

Seeded No. 2 in the draw, sophomore Carolyn McVeigh and freshman Logan Hansen downed Washington's Joyce Ardies and Lina Xu 8-4 in the semifinals before falling to California's Rachael Dillon and Jana Juricova 8-5 in the title match.

In a consolation doubles match, sophomore Jennifer Yen and freshman Courtney Clayton lost to Pacific's Jolanta Twarowska and Sasha Fisher 8-6 in the semifinals.

Clayton and McVeigh paced Stanford in singles play by reaching the quarterfinals. Clayton topped Washington's Aleksandra Malovic 6-0, 6-4 before retiring after trailing 2-0 in the first set against San Francisco's Jenni Heinser in her next match. McVeigh outlasted Saint Mary's Claire Soper 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 before falling to California's Rachael Dillon 6-2, 6-1.

Yen dropped her round of 16 singles match, losing to Ana Chkivishvilli of Saint Mary's 6-4, 6-3. Hansen withdrew from her consolation match against Nevada's Florence DeVrye.

Stanford is back in action this weekend, hosting the ITA Northwest Regional Championships starting Friday, Oct. 17.
