Six Place For Stanford At Oklahoma Open

Nov. 29, 2008

Norman, Okla. - Nine Cardinal wrestlers competed at the Oklahoma Open today held at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla. Six of the nine Stanford wrestlers placed, with junior Jake Johnson and sophomore Kyle Barrett each finishing as the runner-up in their respective weight classes.

Johnson and Barrett both went undefeated before bowing out to a top-10 wrestler in the championship. Johnson won his first three bouts of the day to advance to the 197-pound title match, but was pinned by Oklahoma's No.8 Eric Lapotsky in the championship bout. Barrett won two matches at 174 pounds to reach the final, but dropped an 11-7 decision to the host Sooners' No. 9 Jeff James.

Senior Luke Feist also placed in the 197-pound bracket, taking third place with a 5-1 record. Feist lost his opening match to Oklahoma State's Tyson Yoder, then pinned three opponents in a row to battle back through the consolation bracket. Feist avenged his loss to Yoder to advance to the consolation final and, in the third-place match, won a 13-10 decision over Kyle Bergstedt of Oklahoma. Feist now has 18 career pins, tying him for seventh on the school's career chart.

At 149 pounds, sophomore Max Rosefigura put on an impressive show, placing for the third time in his collegiate career. Rosefigura lost his opening bout to Oklahoma's 15th-ranked Kyle Terry, then rattled off four wins in a row to take third place.

Sophomore Lucas Espericueta went 4-1 at 157 pounds and topped Oklahoma State's Johnny Koepp, 10-6, in the consolation final to take third place.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Cameron Teitelman went 3-2, and advanced to the third-place match with a 2-1 win over freshman teammate Timmy Boone. Teitelman went on to take fourth place, while Boone ended the day 2-2 and did not place.

Freshmen Victor Haug and Matt Sencenbaugh also competed for Stanford. Haug went 1-2, while Sencenbaugh went 2-2 with his first career win by technical fall.

The nine wrestlers combined for 26 wins, including five pins and 11 bonus-point victories.

The team will now break for final exams and resume competition at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18.
