BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 1 Stanford men's gymnastics team fell to No. 5 California, 342.200-338.400, on Friday evening at Haas Pavilion. With the loss, the Cardinal drops to 0-1 in its first meet of the 2009 campaign.
Stanford started its meet on pommel horse with a 52.050. Junior Bryant Hadden was the Cardinal's top finisher on pommel (third) with a 14.300, followed by Oi (sixth) at 13.000, but Cal solidified its victory in the event by taking four of the top six spots and earning a plus-3.95 margin in the event. Stanford went on to split event titles with the Golden Bears, taking floor with a 58.650, vault with a 59.950, and horizontal bar with a 55.900, but couldn't quite shave off enough of the deficit over the course of the meet to overcome Cal.
Bryant Hadden took second in the all-around at 85.600 and Greg Ter-Zakhariants was fourth (82.750) behind the Golden Bears' Glen Ishino, who took the title with an 86.200. The Cardinal earned four individual event victories on the night - Hadden won floor exercise with a 15.000 and he also tied for first on rings with a 14.800, Kyle Oi won vault scoring a 15.500 and Ter-Zakhariants took first on horizontal bar with a 14.550.
Stanford returns home to host the Stanford Open on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
