Third-Ranked Stanford Takes Second At Pacific Coast Collegiate Classic

OAKLAND, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford men's gymnastics team finished in second place behind the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars this evening with its highest team score of the season (356.9) at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Classic at the Oakland Convention Center.

The Cardinal scored the highest total of any NCAA team competing at the meet.  Second-ranked California finished in third, followed by No. 4 Michigan, No. 6 Illinois, No. 14 Air Force and No. 5 Minnesota. Stanford improves to 6-3 against NCAA teams.

On floor exercise, Stanford showed why it was the nation's best in the event, scoring the highest total of the night (60.8) out of any team, paced by sophomore Josh Dixon's 15.5 performance, which was good enough for first place. Redshirt junior Greg Ter-Zakhariants took third with a 15.4.

The Cardinal also posted at 58.65 on pommel horse, eclipsing its previous season-best of 54.35, which it earned at last weekend's Gold Country Classic. All four counting scores at least scored a 14, with senior Bryant Hadden leading the way at 14.85, a new team individual season-best.

On still rings, Stanford also earned another team season-high total of 60.85, also the best cumulative score for any team on the night. Three athletes hit no less than 15.0, and again Hadden led the way with a 15.65, yet another team individual season-high and event title. Redshirt sophomore Nick Noone also hit a career-high on 15.1 on the apparatus.

On vault, Ter-Zakhariants took second place with a 16.0, and all three other competitors for the Cardinal were solid as well, posting a team total of 62.8.

On parallel bars, redshirt senior Sho Nakamori improved upon his season-best, scoring a 15.55, which also gave him the event title on the evening.The Cardinal posted a 58.6 total on the apparatus.

On horizontal bar, Stanford struggled, with Nakamori taking the team's top score of 14.4, all three other counting scores were in the 13s.

Sophomore Ryan Lieberman was the only Cardinal athlete to compete in all-around and finished with an 82.5.

The Cardinal will next compete on Friday, Feb. 27 at home against the Japanese Collegiate All-Star Team. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
