Miscues on the opening two rotations put the No. 3 Stanford women's gymnastics team into a hole it could not climb out of in a loss to unranked San Jose State in a tri-meet at UC Davis on Friday night.
Stanford struggled to season-low scores on the balance beam and floor exercise while San Jose State stuck its routines to build an insurmountable lead, finishing with 194.7 points, to 193.95 for Stanford and 192.7 for UC Davis.
The loss was the first for Stanford (13-1) after opening the season at 12-0, and first to San Jose State (12-1) in their annual series since 2005. The score was a season-low for Stanford.
Stanford suffered a blow when all-around All-America Carly Janiga withdrew from the meet after the opening event, in which she scored a 9.875 to win the balance beam. In fact, Stanford won all four individual events. Nicole Ourada tied San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace with 9.9 on the floor. Freshman Alyssa Brown and sophomore Shelley Alexander tied with San Jose State sophomore Lily Swann on the vault at 9.85. And senior Kelly Fee captured the uneven bars with a 9.9, Stanford's only season-best score after 21 last week at Cal.
Ourada was Stanford's only all-around performer, scoring 38.775 to finish third. Stanford next competes at No. 11 Alabama in a dual meet March 6, before returning home for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on March 21 at Maples Pavilion. ="">
