STANFORD, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford burst out to a 7-1 lead over No. 8 San Jose State Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center and from there cruised to a 16-8 victory. Three Stanford players posted hat tricks as the Cardinal (12-1, 2-0 MPSF) remained unbeaten in MPSF play while send the Spartans to 8-9 overall and 1-2 in MPSF action.
Kelly Eaton, Alex Koran and Melissa Seidemann each tallied three goals in the victory, while Kira Hillman and Pallavi Menon each scored a pair. Individual goals were also scored by Koree Blyleven, Lauren Silver and Heather West.
Amber Oland made a save over the first three-plus periods to anchor a Cardinal defense that limited San Jose State's attempts at net, and Kim Hall came on in relief in the fourth and stopped a pair of shots.
Stanford's attack pushed the Cardinal out to a 4-1 lead after the opening period, then kept up the momentum with the first three goals of the second period to go ahead 7-1. San Jose State, though, would manage to net three straight goals to make it 7-4 heading into halftime.
The Spartans would continue their hot streak to open the second half, scoring two of the half's first three goals to cut the deficit to two at 8-6. But that was as close as San Jose State would get, as Stanford's offense woke up and scored the final five goals of the period to go up 13-8.
Stanford's defense would take over once again in the fourth period, holding the Spartans off the board in the final eight minutes as the offense put the game away with three goals.
The Cardinal hit the road for the next month, starting with next Saturday's 12 p.m. contest at Arizona State. Stanford will complete the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8 against UC Davis and CS Bakersfield at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, in Davis.
