STANFORD, Calif. - Texas starter Cole Green pitched 7.0-innings of three-hit ball and the visiting Longhorns (12-1) scored all of their runs in the fourth en route to a 5-1 victory over Stanford (3-8) in the rubber game of a non-conference series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
Green (2-0), who came into the game with an ERA of 0.59, held Stanford without a hit through the first four innings. Cardinal sophomore right fielder Kellen Kiilsgaard broke up the no-hitter and shutout bid in emphatic fashion, leading off the bottom of the fifth with a towering home run to right field, his team-leading third of the season. However, that was one of only three hits Green would allow on the day, while he walked two and struck out three.
Texas scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning - including four with two outs. Stanford freshman left-hander Scott Snodgress (0-1) was able to dodge jams in the first and third innings during his first career start, but ran into trouble in the fourth. He retired the first batter, but after yielding a single and his fourth walk, was replaced by fellow freshman southpaw Brett Mooneyham. Mooneyham was almost able to escape the inning by allowing only one run, but Jordan Etier grounded a two-run single through the left side and Brandon Loy followed by poking a two-run single of his own just inside the first base bag for a 5-0 Longhorns lead.
Joey August and Jonathan Kaskow each singled as Stanford mounted a threat in the seventh, but Green got out of the inning unscathed. Colin Walsh led off the ninth with a single off Texas closer Austin Wood, but the Longhorns' lefty retired the next three hitters to close out the game.
Cardinal relievers Brandt Walker (2.0 innings), Max Fearnow (1.2) and Michael Marshall (1.0) combined to blank the Longhorns on just one hit over the final 4.2 innings.
Stanford will be off for the next two weeks due to its annual break for winter quarter finals. The Cardinal will next be in action on Saturday, March 21, when it opens Pac-10 play with a 1:00 p.m. PT contest at California.
