FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior right fielder Khris Davis went 4-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI as No. 7/17 Cal State Fullerton (5-2) posted a 9-3 victory over visiting No. 14/7 Stanford (2-5) at Goodwin Field. The win gave the Titans a three-game sweep of the annual non-conference weekend series.
Davis, who entered the game with just one home run and three RBI in six games, hit consecutive two-run homers off Stanford starter Max Fearnow (0-1) in the second and third innings as Fullerton built a 5-1 lead. After the Cardinal climbed within three at 5-2 in the sixth, Davis led off the bottom of the inning with an opposite field, solo shot off Jordan Pries. Davis added an RBI-single in the seventh that plated the Titans' final run of the afternoon.
Stanford received some encouraging offensive signs from a trio of its sophomore position players. Third baseman Zach Jones belted a solo homer off the scoreboard in left-center field in the third and finished 2-for-4, a day after delivering a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning of Saturday night's contest. Right fielder Kellen Kiilsgaard collected RBI-singles in both the sixth and eighth innings, while his eighth-inning hit came in his first at-bat of the season off a left-handed pitcher. Designated hitter Jonathan Kaskow reached base safely in three of his four plate appearances, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Although Pries tired toward the end of his outing, the freshman helped save the Stanford bullpen by keeping Fullerton off the board in the fourth and fifth frames and working 4.0 innings overall. The Cardinal also received a pinch-hit single by Christian Griffiths in the eighth and a pinch-double by Min (Brian) Moon in the ninth as it tried to rally late.
Fullerton freshman right-hander Tyler Pill (1-0) started and earned his first collegiate victory, holding Stanford to two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings.
Stanford will play four home games this week at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond before a two-week break for finals. The Cardinal will host Saint Mary's on Tuesday night for a 5:00 p.m. contest, before welcoming Texas for a three-game weekend series March 6-8.
