STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford took a big step toward collecting its 22nd consecutive Pac-10 title, dispatching of No. 9 UCLA 6-1 on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles.
Stanford and UCLA shared the conference title last year after the Bruins posted a 4-3 win last year in Los Angeles, but the Cardinal looked sharp in Friday's victory.
Stanford improves to 12-2 and 3-0 in Pac-10 play while UCLA falls to 13-4 and 1-1 in conference action. The Cardinal has now won seven in a row.
Stanford claimed the doubles point with two straight wins at court Nos. 1 and 2. The Cardinal managed to pull off a big upset at court No. 1, where No. 17 Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette downed the Bruins' second-ranked duo of Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack 8-1. An 8-3 Stanford win at court No. 2 followed, giving the Cardinal the point.
Jessica Nguyen clinched the match for the Cardinal with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 3 position.
