STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford freshman left-hander Brett Mooneyham struck out 10 in his first collegiate victory, while combining with reliever Drew Storen on a two-hitter as the Cardinal (7-11, 3-3 Pac-10) blanked visiting Washington (10-14, 1-2) by a final of 11-0 this afternoon in a Pac-10 Conference game from Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. With the win, Stanford took the rubber match of this three-game conference series. The Cardinal has now won three of its last four games and four of its last six contests.
Making just his third collegiate start, Mooneyham yielded only a bunt single in 7.0 innings and became the first Stanford freshman to record at least 10 strikeouts in a game in nearly 10 years - since Brian Sager fanned 12 on April 3, 1999 vs. Washington State. Dominant from the start, Mooneyham struck out two batters in each of the first three innings, carried a no-hitter into the sixth, and ended his outing by fanning a pair in the seventh. The southpaw walked three, and faced 24 batters in his 7.0-brilliant innings.
Washington shortstop David Bentrott, the eighth-place hitter, broke up Mooneyham's no-hit bid when he led off the sixth with a perfectly placed, push-bunt single into the "no-man's land" area between the mound, first base and second. However, Bentrott was erased one batter later when he was thrown out by Stanford catcher Zach Jones while attempting to steal second.
Storen replaced Mooneyham to begin the eighth and was electric himself, matching his career high with five strikeouts in 2.0-scoreless innings.
On a day that Stanford needed just one run to win, the Cardinal scored 11. Brent Milleville - who went 5-for-9 with a home run and three RBI in the series, delivered a run-scoring single in the second to get Stanford on the board. The Cardinal then posted a trio of crooked numbers, plating four in the third, three in the sixth and three in the eighth. Colin Walsh set his career high for hits and matched his best for RBI, going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double and three driven in. Kellen Kiilsgaard homered and singled in four at-bats, while matching his career high with four RBI.
Stanford's three-four hitters accounted for the scoring in the bottom of the third. Toby Gerhart - who had six hits and five RBI in the series - drilled a two-run triple off the center field wall. Kiilsgaard then followed with a mammoth, two-run homer - his sixth of the season - to give the Cardinal a 5-0 lead.
The Cardinal again played longball in the sixth, as Joey August connected for a solo shot on an 0-2 pitch. With two on and two out following a Washington error, Walsh ripped a two-run double to cap a three-run frame.
Walsh and Kiilsgaard were at again in Stanford's three-run eighth. Walsh delivered an RBI-single for his fourth straight hit, and with the bases loaded and two out, Kiilsgaard came through with a two-run single.
Stanford also received its third-consecutive multi-hit effort from Jake Schlander, who capped a 7-for-11 series by singling twice and scoring three runs. Adam Gaylord also went 2-for-4, upping his season average to .367 (11-for-30).
Stanford will be right back in action Monday night, as the Cardinal travels to Stockton, Calif. for a non-conference tilt with Pacific. First pitch from Stockton is set for 5:35 p.m. PT.
