TEMPE, Ariz. - Top-ranked Stanford remained unbeaten in MPSF play this season with a 13-6 victory over No. 5 Arizona State Saturday in Tempe. Melissa Seidemann's five goals in the contest helped get Stanford (13-1, 3-0 MPSF) out to an eight-goal lead after three periods against the Sun Devils (9-7, 0-2 MPSF).
Along with Seidemann's five goals, Alex Koran also posted a hat trick with three scores. Koree Blyleven, Kelly Eaton, Kira Hillman, Alyssa Lo and Jessica Steffens all added goals to round out the Cardinal scoring.
Amber Oland was solid in the cage Saturday, stopping 12 ASU shots in three-plus periods of play, while Kim Hall came on for about the final three and a half minutes, stopping a pair of shots.
The teams traded goals in the opening minute of the contest, with Seidemann finding the mark just 21 seconds into the game, and ASU's Bonnie Miles equalizing 21 seconds later. Yet another goal from Seidemann at 5:32 along with a score from Kelly Eaton at 4:04 made it 3-1 Stanford. After the Sun Devils halved the lead, the Cardinal got another pair of goals, this time from Blyleven and Hillman to take a 5-2 advantage after the opening eight minutes.
Koran would then sandwich an Arizona State goal with two of her own within the first 1:39 of the second period, as the Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils 3-2 to take an 8-4 lead into the break. Oland played a major role in the four-goal advantage, as she made eight saves in the first half to keep the Sun Devil attack at bay.
The third period would be where the Cardinal pulled away, as Oland stopped a pair of shots to anchor the defense's effort in shutting Arizona State out in the period. Goals from Steffens, Lo, Seidemann and Koran would extend Stanford's run to 5-0 from the end of the second period, and give the Cardinal an insurmountable 12-4 lead.
Seidemann would net her fifth goal of the game with Stanford's lone score in the final period.
The Cardinal finishes off the weekend by heading to Davis for a pair of games at the Aggie Shootout Sunday, facing UC Davis at 12 p.m. and CS Bakersfield at 3 p.m.
