Berkeley, Calif. - The Stanford track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Cal Outdoor Opener on Saturday afternoon. The men's team fared well with four athletes reaching the NCAA regional standard. At the same time a small contingent of Stanford athletes competed at the UW Last Chance indoor meet in Seattle, Wash.
Garrett Heath paced the Cardinal by winning both the 800 and 1,500 meters. Heath reached the NCAA regional standard in the 1,500 with a time of 3:47.05. He also won the 800 with a time of 1:50.71.
Jacob Evans finished second in both events with a time of 1:51.71 in the 800 meters and a time of 3:48.22 in the 1,500 meters.
The Cardinal had a pair of regional qualifiers in the throws. Kyle Davis-Hammerquist qualified in the hammer with a throw of 186-4, while Geoffrey Tabor qualified in the discus with a throw 179-4. Tabor also won the shot put with a throw of 53-6 ¼.
Also earning a regional qualifying mark was Casey Roche in the pole vault. Roche won the competition with a mark of 16-6 ¾.
The other event winner for the men were Zach Chandy in the 200 meters with a time of 21.67.
The women were led by Madeline Duhon who won the 3,000 meters with at time of 9:49.96.
In Seattle, Arantxa King captured a NCAA provisional standard in the long jump with a leap of 20-3 ¾. King also competed in the triple jump where she had a mark of 40-9, which was the best of the day.
Also competing in the long jump was Griffin Matthew who had a leap of 19-4 ¼.
In the pole vault Katerina Stefanidi finished tied for second with a provisional mark of 13-2 ¼.
The men were represented by Amaechi Morton who won the 400 meters with a time of 47.34.
