STANFORD, Calif. - After a rough start, Stanford rebounded with a strong late season run; however, the Cardinal was not included in the 64-team NCAA Division I Baseball Championships field that was announced this morning.
Despite not qualifying for the postseason, the 2009 campaign was a successful one for head coach Mark Marquess and his club. Stanford got off to a 4-10 start, but showing the resiliency that has been a hallmark of the program, the Cardinal finished 26-15 (.634) over its final 41 contests. That stretch included a series win at Washington State over a Cougars club that won 19 Pac-10 games and will play in the Norman, Oklahoma regional.
Stanford concludes the 2009 season with an overall record of 30-25, as the Cardinal finished at .500 or better for the 16th consecutive season and for the 32nd time in 33 years under Marquess. Stanford also posted its 30th different 30-win campaign in Marquess' tenure.
In addition to the series win in Pullman, Stanford also posted a series win over a Vanderbilt club that will advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal is also responsible for one of the just 13 losses suffered by overall national No. 1 seed Texas.
