STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford looked sharp in its second scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday afternoon, downing California 3-1 in Berkeley.
Five days after defeating Pacific 3-1 in a scrimmage that represented the start of the 2009-10 athletic campaign for all Stanford sport programs, the Cardinal were dominating once again.
For the second consecutive match, Stanford received goals from three different scorers: sophomore Stephanie Byrne, senior Rachel Mozenter and junior Xanthe Travlos.
California got on the board first, with Jessica Kreck scoring in the fifth minute off a 2-on-1 opportunity.
Stanford evened the score at 1-1 when Travlos beat Cal keeper Maddie Hand in the eighth minute. Those would turn out to be the only two shots of the first half as the teams went into the intermission tied at one.
In the 53rd minute, Mozenter scored the go-ahead goal when she slapped a shot from the top of the circle that got past Cal keeper Jessica Pizarek. A little over seven minutes later, Byrne put the game away with another score.
Stanford has one more scrimmage (Aug. 26 vs. UC Davis- 11 a.m.) before opening the season at home against Missouri State on Aug. 30.
Stanford closed out the 2008 season at 9-11 overall, advancing to the NCAA Play-in game for the second straight season. The Cardinal, which won seven of its final nine games, was also crowned NorPac Tournament champions for the second year in a row with a 2-1 victory over No. 16 California.
