Field Hockey Improves To 5-0 Following 3-0 Shutout Of VCU

IOWA CITY, Iowa- Stanford used three first-half goals and a stingy defense to post its second shutout of the season on Saturday night, blanking VCU 3-0 in a neutral site game at Iowa City, Iowa.

With the win, the Cardinal (5-0) remains unbeaten heading into tomorrow night's road clash against No. 17 Iowa.

Two days after defeating Northwestern 3-1, Stanford's offense looked crisp once again while the defense limited VCU (4-1) to just three shot attempts.

Stanford recorded only nine shots in the match, but five of its attempts in the first half resulted in goals.

Senior Midori Uehara, held scoreless through the first four games after leading Stanford in goals and points last year, gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest when she slammed in a shot from 10 yards out for her first goal of the year.

At the 29:16 mark of the first half, freshman Katie Mitchell scored her second goal of the season when she found the cage following a deflection.

Less than 10 minutes later, freshman Kelsey Lloyd scored her first collegiate goal when she blasted a shot past VCU keeper Megan Botteri.

VCU held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.

The only save of the match was made by senior Alessandra Moss, who lowered her GAA to 0.60 while notching her second shutout of the year.

NOTES: Saturday's contest represented the first of two neutral site games for Stanford this year, along with a Nov. 1 date against Louisville in College Park, Md. ...
