STANFORD, Calif.- Backed by Erin Magill's hat trick, California upset No. 13 Stanford 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Berkeley and handed the Cardinal its first loss of the season.

Stanford (8-1, 2-1 NorPac) entered the game off to the best start in school history at 8-0 and was bidding to tie a school record with nine consecutive wins.

Instead, California (3-5, 1-1 NorPac) snapped a five-game losing streak and now has not lost to Stanford in Berkeley since a 1-0 Cardinal shutout back on Nov. 1, 1998.

Stanford held leads of 2-1 and 3-2 before California completed the second-half comeback.

For the eighth time in nine games, Stanford scored at least three goals in game.

Trailing 1-0, junior Xanthe Travlos evened the game when she eluded several defenders and fired a shot to the right of the cage for her fifth goal of the year. Travlos tallied a team-best four shot attempts.

Nine minutes later, freshman Kelsey Lloyd notched her third goal of the year when she scored inside a scrum in the circle.

The Golden Bears knotted the contest at 2-2 right before halftime on the strength of Magill's first goal coming off a penalty corner.

Just over 10 minutes into the second period, freshman Becky Dru put Stanford ahead 3-2 when she scored following a penalty corner with assists from junior Jaimee Erickson and senior Nora Soza.

But Magill found the cage two more times off penalty corners, securing the 4-3 California upset.

Of Stanford's remaining eight regular season games, six are away from home. Three of those take place next weekend, when the Cardinal travels to Pennsylvania to play three games over a four-day stretch. Stanford faces Temple on Friday, Oct. 2, LaSalle on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Penn State on Monday, Oct. 5.
