Stanford Women Victorious On Home Waters

Oct. 27, 2009

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford sailing hosted its first event of the year this past weekend, the Bryson Women's Intersectional. This event is split into two days of competition - day one being fleet racing, and day two being 2v2 team racing. On Saturday, the primarily freshman squad of Eliza Richartz and Rebecca King in A-division, and Katie Lund and senior Megan Grove in B-division snatched victory from the Hawaii Rainbows in the last race to win the fleet racing portion of the event by one point. The lady Cardinal continued their winning ways on Sunday to go undefeated all day in the team race portion of the regatta, finishing with an impressive 9-0 record.

The Stanford Coed team traveled to Brown University this past weekend to compete in yet another strong east coast intersectional, the Sherman Hoyt Trophy. Conditions on Saturday saw a strong, warm southerly breeze with rain showers mixed in, while Sunday saw a cold, shifty, and puffy northwesterly decrease as the day continued. Conditions, current, and course setting made good starts and getting into phase with the shifts early in the windward beat a necessity for any success. Struggles on the starting line for the coed Cardinal team led to a tough event and a tougher 17th place finish.

Frank Ustach, assistant coach, had this to say about the weekend, "Winning the women's event at home was big for us and much needed. It shows we are still a strong team and a leader within our district. While the recent results out east though show we still have a lot of work to do on the national level, the team is learning a lot at these major events, and we'll continue to build of that for the spring."

The coed and women's teams will travel to Boston this coming weekend for the unofficial fall New England championships for the Schell Trophy hosted by MIT and the Urn Trophy hosted by Harvard.
