Late Push Powers Stanford Past Virginia 57-52 In Cancun

CANCUN, Mexico- Landry Fields scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Stanford to a 57-52 win over Virginia in the Cancun Challenge on Tuesday night.

The Cardinal (3-2) trailed 47-46 with 4:52 left in the second half after Virginia's Mustapha Farrakhan hit two free throws. That's the last time the Cavaliers (3-2) would lead, as Stanford answered with nine straight points to take a 55-47 lead with 2:46 remaining, capped by a three-pointer from Jeremy Green.

Stanford will now face No. 5/5 Kentucky (5-0, 0-0 SEC) in the tournament's championship game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. PT.

Virginia cut the lead to three points with 12 seconds left to play. But Fields, who went 9-for-16 from the floor, made two free throws to give Stanford enough cushion for the win.

Jeff Jones led the Cavaliers with 17 points and Sylven Landesberg had 16.

Both teams shot poorly as Stanford shot 38.9 percent from floor (21-for-54), while Virginia shot 37.8 percent (17-for-45). The Cardinal used solid 3-point shooting by going 8-for-16.

The game featured six ties and 13 lead changes.

NOTES: Landry Fields posted his second straight double-double and the seventh of this career. He was 5-8 from the foul line, dished out three assists and racked up three steals in 37 minutes ... Drew Shiller nailed three triples in the first half, finishing with nine points to help Stanford jet out to an early lead ... Stanford was 8-16 from three-point territory while Virginia was just 4-18 ... The Cavaliers were 14-24 from the charity stripe, compared to the Cardinal's clip of 7-15 ... Stanford has produced a 20-point scorer in all five games this year ... Jarrett Mann has dished out at least five assists in every game this season ... Virginia led 31-30 at halftime.
