Tucson, Ariz. - Stanford synchronized swimming stayed unbeaten with a weekend sweep of the University of Arizona. The Cardinal defeated the Wildcats on Saturday by a score of 100-76.5 and again on Sunday with a score of 99-77.5.
On Saturday Stanford began by sweeping the `A' Elements and `B' Figures competitions. In Elements, Erin Bell led the Cardinal with a score of 78.061 to finish first overall. Close behind Bell were Corinne Smith (77.849) in second place and Debbie Chen (77.741) in third place. Taylor Durand finished fifth for Stanford with a total score of 77.321 to give the Cardinal the higher average score.
In Figures, freshman Maria Koroleva took the top spot with a score of 72.602. She led a Stanford sweep of the top seven spots.
In the routines, Stanford took three out of four. The trio of Durand, Koroleva and Olivia Morgan had the top score of 87.000. They edged their teammates, Chen, Bell and Alex Bollaidlaw who finished second with a score of 85.000.
Stanford also had the top two duets with Chen and Durand edging teammates Koroleva and Morgan, 86.750 to 86.000.
In the team competition Stanford totaled the highest score of the day in defeating Arizona. The team of Bell, Chen, Durand, Morgan Fuller, Koroleva, Michelle Moore, Olivia Morgan and Smith finished with a score of 91.750 compared to 78.0 for Arizona.
The lone victory of the day for Arizona came in the solo competition where Alicia Sepeulveda edged Koko Urata of Stanford 83.750 to 82.250.
Sunday was more of the same for Stanford as the Cardinal won each of the same events to defeat Arizona on consecutive days.
For a second straight day the team of Durand, Koroleva and Morgan captured the trio competition, but improved their score to 87.667.
In the duets, the Stanford teams switched places with Koroleva and Morgan defeating Chen and Durand 87.667 to 85.167.
Stanford again dominated the team competition on Sunday winning with a score of 88.667.
Sepeluveda of Arizona helped the Wildcats avoid the sweep for the second day in a row by winning the solo competition with a score of 83.833. Urata finished second with a score of 81.167.
Stanford finished the day by sweeping the `A' Elements and `B' Figures competitions. Chen took the top spot in elements with a score of 79.662, while Koroleva finished atop the figures group with a score of 76.663.
The Cardinal will next compete Saturday, March 7, when they host Arizona at 1:30 p.m. Stanford will then play host to the West Regional on Sunday, March 8, at 9:00 a.m.
