STANFORD, Calif. - On a night that Stanford head coach Mark Marquess won his 1,342nd game to move into an eighth-place tie for the most in the history of NCAA Division I baseball, the host Cardinal (16-16) rolled to an 11-1, non-conference victory over Santa Clara (15-21) at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Marquess has a career 1,342-685-7 (.662) record over 33 years at the helm of his alma mater, matching Rod Dedeaux for eighth place. Dedeaux posted a 1,342-597-16 (.691) ledger over 44 seasons at USC (1942-47 and 1949-86).
Marquess was lifted to the historic win by four-hit games from a pair of seniors - first baseman Brent Milleville and designated hitter Joey August. Milleville tied his career high for hits for the sixth time, by going 4-for-4 with a career-best three doubles. The slugging first baseman also added three RBI and scored a run. August extended his hitting streak to eight games with four singles in four at-bats, along with a run scored and a RBI.
Stanford, which won for the seventh time in its last nine home games, also received big offensive nights from Kellen Kiilsgaard (2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI) and Jake Schlander (2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI). Colin Walsh extended his hitting streak to 10 games and reached base safely for the 15th straight contest, going 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI out of the leadoff spot.
On the opposite end of the win spectrum from his skipper was freshman starting pitcher Scott Snodgress (1-2), who earned his first collegiate victory with 3.0-shutout innings. The southpaw became the fourth Cardinal freshman hurler to post a win in 2009, joining Brian Busick (1-0), Brett Mooneyham (3-2) and Jordan Pries (3-0).
Stanford scored 10 of its 11 runs over the first three innings tonight to quickly run away with its sixth straight non-conference win. Five of the first six batters reached base safely in the first, as the Cardinal jumped on Santa Clara starter Steve Kalush (1-4) for a five-run opening frame. August singled and Toby Gerhart walked, before Kiilsgaard singled home Stanford's first run and Milleville doubled home a pair for a 3-0 lead. Zach Jones followed with an RBI-single and stole his team-leading eighth base, before scoring on Schlander's RBI-double.
More of the same followed for Stanford in the second and third innings. Kiilsgaard's RBI-double and Milleville's run-scoring single put the Cardinal ahead 7-0 after two, before the seven-eight-nine hitters all reached to spark a three-run, third-inning rally. Walsh brought home a run in the third with an RBI-fielder's choice, Schlander scored on a wild pitch and August delivered an RBI-single. Stanford scored an unearned run in the sixth on a two-out fielding error.
Stanford received excellent work from the bullpen tonight after Snodgress' abbreviated, midweek start. Danny Sandbrink tossed 3.0-innings of two-hit, shutout ball, while Kyle Thompson and Carey Schwartz each struck out a batter during perfect frames. Santa Clara scored an unearned run off Drew Storen in the ninth.
Stanford will continue its season-long, seven-game homestand with a non-conference contest against California on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch from Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is set for 5:00 p.m. PT.
