STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State freshman right-hander Sam Gaviglio hurled a three-hit shutout for his first collegiate complete game as the Beavers (34-16, 14-11 Pac-10) posted a 5-0 victory over host Stanford (29-24, 12-13) in the opener of a three-game, Pac-10 series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Michael Miller went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI to lead the Oregon State offense.
The Cardinal has lost its last three games after a season-best six-game winning streak.
Gaviligo improved to 9-1 by going the distance in just his fifth career start. Beginning with a double play to end the fourth in a 3-0 game, the freshman right-hander retired the final 16 batters he faced as the Beavers tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Gaviligo allowed just three singles and did not walk a batter, while he struck out seven - one shy of his career high.
Stanford countered on the mound with its own excellent freshman, Jordan Pries. The right-hander pitched well in his own right, settling down to pitch into the eighth after allowing three runs in the first two innings. In fact, at one point Pries (4-4) set down eight straight batters and 11 of 13 between the third and sixth innings. However, he was hindered some by command, as he walked five and threw a pair of wild pitches while allowing five runs in 7.0-plus innings.
Miller led off tonight's game with a triple, and scored on an RBI-groundout by Adalberto Santos. Oregon State scored a second first-inning run for free, as Joey Wong reached on a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a second wild pitch.
Oregon State increased its lead to 3-0 in the second by plating the second of three two-out runs it would score on the night, this coming courtesy of a Miller RBI-single. Ryan Ortiz delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh, while the Beavers added a fifth run in the eighth on the third Stanford wild pitch of the evening.
Kellen Kiilsgaard and Colin Walsh both bounced back after having streaks snapped Tuesday night. Kiilsgaard singled twice in three at-bats one game after having a 12-game hitting streak halted. Walsh went 1-for-4 a game after seeing his streak of reaching base safely in 34 straight contests come to an end.
Stanford and Oregon State will square off in the second game of this weekend series tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., with the Cardinal's annual fireworks extravaganza to take place following the game.
