BERKELEY, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford continued its high-scoring ways as it swept to a pair of victories Sunday at the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley. The Cardinal opened the day with a 16-2 rout of CSU Monterey Bay before closing out its opening weekend with a 19-8 victory over Pacific.
Stanford (3-0) will open up its home slate in its next action, hosting the Stanford Invitational at Avery Aquatic Center next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7. The Cardinal will open up tournament action Saturday at 8:30 a.m. against Michigan. Sophomore Pallavi Menon led all Cardinal players with five goals over the two games, including four in the opener against CSUMB. Mimi Bury and Alexis Lee also scored hat tricks against the Otters, while in the day's second game, Melissa Seidemann and Alyssa Lo each scored three goals.
The Cardinal showed its versatility over the two wins, as eight different players accounted for goals in the win over CSUMB and 11 different players netted at least one goal against Pacific early in the afternoon.
Junior Kim Hall and freshman Kate Baldoni handed goalkeeping duties Sunday, as the pair split time in each contest. Hall started the morning contest and ended up making nine saves on the day while Baldoni, who started the afternoon game against Pacific, stopped a total of five shots.
In the opener, Stanford exploded for seven goals in the opening period to put the Otters in an early hole. Hall maintained her clean sheet up until being replaced by Baldoni with 3:12 remaining in the first half and Stanford up 9-0. The Cardinal would score three more times before the break to take a 12-0 lead into the locker room.
Hall would return to the game with 4:30 remaining in the third period and finish things up, making a total of five saves in the contest.
Along with Menon's four goals and three from both Bury and Lee, the Cardinal got a pair of goals from Vee Dunlevie in addition to single goals from Jillian Garton, Victoria Kennedy, Lo and Seidemann.
After a couple hours' break, the Cardinal returned to the pool against the Pacific Tigers. Baldoni started the contest in the net, and a high-scoring first period saw the Cardinal in possession of a 5-3 lead. Hall would sub back in to start the second period, where the Cardinal would outscore the Tigers 4-1 to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
With the score 10-5 in favor of Stanford at 3:50 of the third period, Baldoni returned to the contest and would finish things up. Both Baldoni and Hall made four saves in the contest.
Stanford's offense was led against the Tigers by hat tricks from Lo and Seidemann, while Kennedy, Kelly Eaton, Kim Krueger and Annika Dries all scored a pair of goals. Menon, Cassie Churnside, Monica Coughlan, Alex Koran and Jessica Steffens would all chip in a goal to account for the final Cardinal tally.
