Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's gymnastics season got underway on Friday night at Burnham Pavilion with the annual Intrasquad meet. The Cardinal were split into two teams, the Cardinal squad and the Black squad.

The evening gives the Stanford athletes a chance to perform under meet conditions, although the results do not count toward the season.

The black team comprised of Eddie Penev, Tim Gentry, Josh Dixon, Kyle Oi, Jason Stevens, Lucas Hughes, John Martin, Cameron Foreman and James Fosco won the meet with a team score of 393.700.

Gentry had top all-around score of 84.600. He also had the best individual scores in the vault (16.300) and on rings (15.600), both events he was an All-American in last season.

The freshman, Penev showed impressive tumbling, taking the high score in the floor exercise with a mark of 15.200.

The Cardinal team of Paul Hichwa, Jordan Nolff, Eric Hergenrader, Ryan Lieberman, Benjamin Rudolph, Gabriel Alvarado, Alex Buscaglia and Nicholas Noone finished with 372.000 points.

The Cardinal team was led by Noone who took the top score on the parallel bars with a score of 14.900 and Buscaglia led the team on the high bar with a score of 14.600.

The top score on the pommel horse was a tie between Hughes of the black team and Alvarado of the Cardinal team with scores of 14.100.

Stanford is coming off an outstanding 2009 season, where the Cardinal captured the NCAA title, the fourth in school history. They enter the 2010 season with a No. 1 national ranking as they look to repeat.

Stanford will open the regular season next Friday, January 15, at 7:30 pm when they travel to Berkeley to take on California.
