Syracuse, N.Y. - The No. 13 Stanford Cardinal opened the season with a 16-9 win over Le Moyne. The Cardinal dominated play, building a 11-3 first-half lead, before finishing the Dolphins. Sarah Flynn led the Cardinal wiith five goals.
Stanford jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Dana Lindsay. The first of two goals from Lindsay gave Stanford the initial lead.
Lauren Schmidt assisted Lindsay on the first goal and then scored goal No. 2, unassisted, to give Stanford a lead it would not look back from. Schmidt later added a second goal in the half.
The Cardinal built an 11-3 first-half lead, including a first half hat trick from Flynn. Other goal scorers in the half included, Juie Christy, Karen Nesbitt, Catherine Swanson and Schmidt.
Stanford did not let Le Moyne back into the game in the second half. The Dolphins did improve its scoring the the second frame, but the Cardinal matched each goal to hold onto its sizable advantage.
Flynn added two more goals as the Cardinal added five in the half. Nesbitt, Leslie Foard and Maria Fortino also added second-half goals for Stanford on the way to a 16-9 victory.
Stanford will next face national power Syracuse back in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 10:00 am, PST.
