SAN JOSE, Calif. - A big third quarter helped the top-ranked Stanford women's water polo team break open a close contest and cruise to its first MPSF victory, a 10-4 decision over No. 10 San Jose State.
Stanford (9-0, 1-0 MPSF) extends its season-opening winning streak to nine games and now looks ahead to the UCI Invitational next weekend. The Cardinal, the top seed in the tournament, will open Group A play Saturday morning, Feb. 27 against UC San Diego at 9 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School.
Sophomore two-meter Melissa Seidemann was Stanford's top scorer Saturday, scoring three goals in the win. Kelly Eaton, Kelsey Holshouser and Pallavi Menon each scored twice while Jessica Steffens added a goal.
In the cage, freshman Kate Baldoni got the start and made a save over a half of action, before junior Amber Oland took over and stopped five shots in the final 16 minutes.
Stanford scored twice in each of the first two periods and held a 4-2 lead over the Spartans at halftime. But in the third period, the Cardinal exploded for five unanswered goals, turning a two-goal advantage into a 9-2 cushion.
Over the final eight minutes, the Cardinal added another goal to its tally, while the Spartans could manage only a pair to account for the 10-4 final.
